On mountain routes, long downhill descents are the most demanding test of vehicle safety. To tackle this, the X5000 deploys a three-tier braking system: the engine brake and hydraulic retarder manage speed continuously, leaving the service brakes as a final safety net to build ample braking redundancy. Negotiating mountain slopes with a 180-tonne gross load makes steep climbs a tough performance challenge.
